El Museo Cultural – Angels, Mermaids, and Umbrellas

Our upcoming exhibit is a collection of early Guna art including mola textiles, sacred healing carvings and ledger drawings created from the late 19th century to 1970, organized by the Geoversity Foundation.

These objects were originally acquired by early Panama Canal staff members, US servicemen, tourists, explorers and art dealers. In cooperation with Panama’s Ministry of Culture and Florida State University, most of this collection, which has not been displayed publicly, has been committed by Geoversity’s Curator of Indigenous Art, Tom Hannaher, for repatriation to Panama.

This exhibit is the collection’s first stop on a journey back to Panama. It has received approval from the Guna Cultural Congress.

Join us July 31st-August 30th to view the exhibit and enjoy presentations each Saturday at noon by author and curator Tom Hannaher, Guna scholar and author Agar Tejada, scholar and author Prudence Grissom and University of Virginia professor Rolando Vargas.
