The Cosmos from Earth: Railyard Water Tower Light Projections

June 23, 2024 @ 8:30 pm - 10:30 pm

As part of an Interdisciplinary series of projects related to Night Sky Preservation in New Mexico, Dark Sky Land, Inc., a non-profit organization, reconsiders the potential of transdisciplinary projects as an environmentally grounded practice, where creators, space scientists, conservationists, community, nature adventurers, innovators and the unknown converge. The Cosmos from Earth, is a Site-Specific Light Projections Public Event at the Railyard. The light projections will illuminate the Water Tower and Violet Crown’s Wall facade across the rails for four evenings in June at sundown. This multimedia project is part of a series of advocacy related outreach strategies on night sky preservation. It includes astrophotographic scenes from enchanted
dark skies above the New Mexico landscape and eyewitness accounts that speak to the necessity of preserving the night in an era of increasing light pollution. The nights will be hosted by the newly formed Dark Sky Land Team. Telescopes are planned to be safely set up, for star gazing observation around the water tank. The Cosmos from Earth includes collaborations with astronomers from the New Mexico DarkSky Chapter – Dark Sky New Mexico Observatory as well as members of the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, Santa Fe Railyard, Audubon Society, Santa Fe Audio Video and Magnetic Laboratorium™. Funding for The Cosmos from Earth was generously provided through Dark Sky New Mexico Observatory, (Animas) the New Mexico DarkSky Chapter – Magnetic Laboratorium™.
